The rise of Basketball
Spreading around the world, basketball came to Brazil in 1896, at the hands of an American missionary, Auguste F. Shaw, in 1896. As a sport, however, it was only in 1912 that it was practiced for the first time in Rio de Janeiro, also in the ACM, in a small precinct in Rua Quitanda, nº 47, where two columns located in the middle of the hall disturbed "a little" the movement of the practitioners. The Brazilian basketball has been standing out in the world scene descends 1989, when it obtained for the first time an honorable position: third classified in Olympic Games of London. Since then in our country its practice is intense and the quality of our basketball is respected internationally as one of the world powers of this sport. Our winners have already won several important titles in international championships and tournaments. Twice world champion, (Santiago in 59 and in Rio de Janeiro in 63) our selection had high level players among them Vlamir Marques, Amaury Passos
