Gravitational Waves?

In the last weeks, the Physics Nobel Prize was awarded to Rainer Weiss, Barry Barish and Kip S. Thorne. These scientists have been able to prove the existence of a phenomenon predicted by Einstein in his General Theory Of Relativity (a century ago), the Gravitational Waves.

This phenomenon is created by events that involve acceleration or interacting between super massive bodies. It creates distortions on the space-time called Gravitational Waves.

It´s very hard to detect these waves, so is necessary a very accurate equipment which includes two giant tunnels with 2,5 miles long, placed in ‘L’ format, ready to detect the minimum variation of the light that passes through then.

Indeed, it’s one more amazing step to the humanity for the knowledge about our home, the universe.
