IRREGULAR VERBS
Although
irregular verbs constitute a small minority in relation to all verbs in the
language, the frequency with which they occur is very high, which gives them
significant importance.
They are all
of Anglo-Saxon origin and refer predominantly to common actions.
WHAT ARE IRREGULAR VERBS?
Irregular
English verbs are verbs that do not follow the general rule of formation of the
Past and the Past Participle. The formation of Past and Past Participle,
according to the general rule, which applies to all other verbs, is given by
the -ed suffix. Therefore, every verb that does not follow this pattern will be
classified as irregular.
It is
interesting to note that the irregularity of English verbs manifests only in
the forms of Past and Past Participle, and not in their conjugation, as in
Portuguese. The only English verbs that also have an irregular conjugation are
the verb to be and the modal auxiliary verbs (can, may, might, shall, must,
etc.).
