Do you know Jupiter?
Ever heard of Jupiter? Probably so, because
this is the largest planet in our entire solar system. The giant contains a
mass corresponding to 2.5 times the sum of the masses of all the other planets which
orbit the Sun. In order to have a notion of its size, we would need to
agglomerate more than 1000 Earths to reach its volume, but to reach its mass,
”just” 300 Earths would be required. With such data, we can conclude that the
density of Jupiter is much smaller than the Earth’s, because this is a
predominantly gaseous planet. Still, they are jaw-dropping numbers.
The brute has 4 moons, three of
them larger than our terrestrial Moon. Ganymede, the largest moon in the solar
system has twice the mass of the Earth's Moon and 1.5 times its volume. All the
moons have a much larger orbital radius than the Moon, but they complete this
orbit at an impressive speed! This is due to the exaggerated mass of the
planet, which accelerates the satellites around it.
Many may have noticed the most
striking feature of Jupiter: the Great Red Spot. Contrary to many people's
beliefs, it is a persistent storm, which for sure has lasted over 350 years,
being first observed in 1665, the same year as the last Black Death outbreak in
London.
