The boar is widely distributed throughout Central and Western Europe. Being common in vast areas of the national continental territory, it is globally more abundant along the border and to the south of the river Tagus.

It is often found in hardwoods and in agricultural areas that have areas where they can shelter. Often individuals of this species take refuge in shallow cavities and within spots of dense vegetation.

The boar spends most of the day scouring the land for food. It is an omnivorous animal, with preference for plant matter such as roots, fruits, acorns, nuts and seeds. They also invade cultivated lands, especially fields of potatoes and corn.

Boars also include animals in their diet, such as snails, earthworms, insects, bird eggs and even small mammals. They also consume dead animals.

The species has a matriarchal social structure and the solitary adult males only join the females in the reproductive period (November to January).
