Competition that serves as a test event for the World Cup should disappear from the FIFA calendar, which is studying to replace it with the U20 World Cup.

Confederations Cup will most likely end. The 2017 edition of the tournament, to be played in Russia from June 17 to July 2, should be the last. According to GloboEsporte.com, in Manana, Bahrain, during the last annual congress of FIFA, the organization concluded that it is not worth insisting on the competition.

The Confederations Cup is always played in the country that will host the World Cup the following year and serves as a test event for the World Cup. The continental champions, the previous World Cup champion and the host of the next will take part.

What to do instead of the Confederations Cup is the other discussion - much broader and with many alternatives in debate. One idea is to have a test event in the country that will host the World Cup one year later. The Under-20 World Cup is an alternative, as an advance in women's football. One World Club is another. This will not be set so quickly.

There are several reasons why FIFA may end the Confederations Cup in the way it is organized today.
After Russia-2018, the World Cup will be played in Qatar in 2022 and during the months of November and December in an attempt to mitigate the effects of the heat in the Middle East. This change in the calendar - the Cup historically takes place in the middle of the year - is already a reason for a war with European clubs. No one wants to deal with this problem in 2021;
From 2026, everything indicates that the World Cup happens to be disputed by 48 selections, and organized in more than one country. In the specific case of 2026, the only application submitted so far is the joint US, Mexico and Canada. In this context, it makes little sense a test event in the mold of the current Confederations Cup;
The 2017 edition is a commercial failure. A month before the start of the tournament, less than half of the tickets were sold. Only one game (between Portugal and Russia) managed to have all tickets sold. No Russian TV station has reached an agreement with FIFA to broadcast the matches;
From the sporting point of view, the situation is not much more encouraging. Germany, the current world champion, has given away a holiday for the top players and will bring a very young team to the competition. Neuer, Boateng, Hummels, Kroos, Khedira, Özil and Müller, for example, will not be in Russia. Worse: Portugal can go without Cristiano Ronaldo.
