Baseball

What is:

Baseball is a very popular sport in the United States, with millions of fans. Children and adults engage in sports, including clubs and schools. In Asia and Cuba this game is also very popular. In Brazil it is little practiced and known by the population, except by the Japanese-Brazilian community.

Origin of baseball:

The game was created in the United States in 1839. However, the rules were made in 1845 by the American Alexander Cartwright. The first official game was played on June 19, 1846, in New York City.

How is the sport:

The sport is to score (runs). The field is a semicircle, with a square inserted. The bases are positioned at the meeting points between the square and the semicircle. Each of the two teams has 9 players.   The dynamics of the game work as follows: the pint (pitcher) must throw (in three chances) the ball, passing through the batsman (runner). Behind this is the catcher, the same team as the pitcher, called a catcher.

The hitter must hit the ball, throwing it away, and run to the bases. When the ball is thrown out of the stadium, a fact that happens only a few times due to the difficulty, it is considered the home run and worth a point. Interceptors of the opposing team (fielders) must catch the ball and play in the direction of the bases for the players of their team, to avoid the progress of the batter. If the batter is able to traverse all bases, the point is counted.

The whole game is composed of 9 turns (alternate attack and defense). Each turn ends when the three batters are replaced. This occurs when the point is not marked.

Curiosities:

- Baseball has been part of the Olympics since the Barcelona Games (1992).

- The world's leading baseball is the International Baseball Federation. In Brazil, the association responsible for the sport is the Brazilian Confederation of Baseball and Softball.

- South Korea, Cuba, Japan and the United States are currently the world's great powers in the sport.

- The last World Baseball Classic, one of the main international sporting events, was held in Los Angeles in 2017. The US team won the title after beating Puerto Rico 8-0.
